Earth is no stranger to climate change. Throughout its history, the planet has undergone periods of warmth and icy cold. There is a growing concern that human activities are contributing to a new breed of climate change that will have devastating effects on the human population.

The problem is an increase in global temperatures, thought to be caused by an increase in greenhouse gases. While these gases—like carbon dioxide, water vapor, and methane—are normally present and necessary to help keep the planet warm, an increase in their concentration is contributing to a rise in global average surface temperatures.

Some scientists believe that this increase is due to greenhouse gases produced through human activities. In the United States, three-quarters of humans-generated greenhouse gas emissions are due to energy use, mostly in the form of carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, more than half the energy-related emissions come from large stationary sources such as power plants, while about a third comes from transportation.

The U.S. government is working to slow the growth of emissions and to encourage other countries to do the same. Families can make changes in their own lives and habits to slow the growth of emissions in the United States. Reduce your carbon footprint and replace all of your incandescent light bulbs with CFL’s. Join a carpool. Buy locally-grown organic food. Install solar panels. Start your own compost pile in the backyard.

Home Energy Audit:

Money-saving measures that can reduce expenses in our household represent an opportunity to go green at home.

· Installing low flow shower-heads can save approximately $18 - $24 Per Year and can save as much as 7,458 gallons of water as well as energy saved because you’re not heating more water.

· Raise your air conditioner thermostat setting can save you $144 - $176 per year.

· Some utility companies offer programs you can enroll in that could save you up to $200 this summer. Air conditioning usage during peak periods is adjusted.

· Check your air conditioner filter as a tune-up and keep the South and East blinds closed could save on unwanted heat gain or better yet use that Sun to power your house with Solar Power.

· Install a whole house fan can save as much as $115 per year, cool savings that can reduce your air conditioner usage…we call that an Attic Fan.

· Seal air leaks and caulk cracks and gaps around the house, interior and exterior.

· Don’t forget the check the air duct system; leaks can add as much as 20% to your heating and cooling costs.

Saving water:

· Take you car to the car wash…they usually recycle their water

· Don’t let the water run when brushing your teeth.

· Ever hear of the military shower? Turn on the water get wet and stop the flow while you soap up all over then turn back and rinse…you will save thousands of gallons every year and you will be helping keep water from running out…

· Use a pool cover to stop the evaporation and save water.

· Replace pool pump with a Hybrid pump that is 80% more efficient and can save up to 18% of your total electric bill, yes that’s right…this is an energy hog…
